Rabies
antibody testing by dogs, cats and ferrets
Vet•Med•Lab is since 2005 one of the EU-commissions
approved laboratories for testing of rabies antibody titre in serum
from dogs, cats and ferrets by using the
Fluorescens-antibody-virusneutralizations test (FAVN). Because of
variating travel regulations in each country, it is extremely
important to know the regulations set by the country in questions,
in good time before the animal is planned for travel. Is a rabies
antibody titre required, please send us serum so that the original
certificate can be send to the clinic in time, and the titre be
written in the animals passport before departure.
The left picture shows a hemolysed sample, which is
useless, while the right picture shows normal serum.
Because the test method used are a fluorescens test, light is send
through the serum to measure the amount of antibody present. Is the
sample strongly hemolysed this cannot be done correctly. At the same
time toxins are released from the erythrocytes, when they
deteriorates, which react with the test reagents so measuring is not
possible. Also strongly lipaemic serum interacts with the rabies
virus, which are in the test. This courses false results, and
therefore such a sample cannot be tested. Lipaemia can occur, if the
patient has eaten shortly before blood sampling or it is sick.
To avoid that the sample cannot be tested, and must be re-tested,
please send us serum!
- And in optimal situations from a fasted patient.
